The purpose of the Order is not especially cryptic or arcane. It does not need to be expressed in parables, symbols or mystifying texts 'for the initiated'. It can be summed up in a single sentence:
The business of the Order is the destruction of unwanted bondage. This is the threefold intent of the Order, achieved through the training that every member is entitled to:
- The destruction of worldly and social bondage, e.g. material want, oppression, isolation, loneliness, a perceived 'misfit' status. This is achieved through Manifest Fraternity.
- The destruction of mental bondage, e.g. self-destructive habits, negative self-regard, undue pessimism, 'roadblock thinking', cyclic or addictive behaviour. This is achieved through Collegial Discourse.
- The destruction of subtle bondage, e.g. the effects of crude malevolent magic, negative psychic atmospheres, 'hauntings', the after effects of ill-advised workings. This is achieved through Tuition in Practical Magic.
As well as the liberation of its own members from the threefold skein of unwanted bondage, the Order extends its influence into the everyday world. Its members offer competent assistance to those who require it, particularly in the area of magical difficulties. In the present climate, there are a great many would-be magicians bringing trouble upon themselves and others. Members of the Order can be relied on to clear up that which others cannot.
these he shall learn and teach.' The Book of the Law, ch. 1, vs. 37
The Order acts as a repository for magical experience. This is no idle boast. The sum total of the senior members' experience alone would amount to several centuries' worth of study and practice. More, this repository is constantly being updated. An organisation that does not evolve its approach to magic will become stagnant, and even the Beast was bidden to learn before he could teach.
