The most elementary explanation is that just as every thought or action a person undertakes involves some manner of transaction between themselves and the rest of the universe, so the nature of this transaction should be motivated by "love" for the entirety of that universe and, if one is of a religious persuasion, the divine power which animates it. Additionally, we could say that the action that is undertaken must be deliberately selected by the individual so as to be in accordance with their Will, rather than being an involuntary reaction precipitated by arbitrary conditions over which they have no control. However, an elaboration of this interpretation is opened to us if we ask ourselves "What is love?" In this context we need to extend our usual definition of love to emphasise the inclusion of the unconditional acceptance and integration of all that is constituted as "other" from the standpoint of the individual concerned. The reader may wish to consider the implications of this definition before moving on to the next paragraph.
